Right at the end of the Culture tree, you have exactly three technologies that affect succession. Technology in CK2 was comprised almost entirely of compounding bonuses to certain facets of the game and, for Economy, some building unlocks. but the technologies themselves are more complex.

Not only is there the layer of culture control, in which if you want direct input on research you need to ensure you remain in control of the majority of counties following your culture in the world. The technology system, on the other hand, is considerably more complex. Conversely, CK3 adds the screen-vs-pursuit metagame to combat, something the player does have direct control over when they compose their armies, and the ability to hand-craft an army to according to local terrain or local rivals by expanding and deepening retinues into the men-at-arms mechanic. Sure, it's a layer of numbers removed, but it wasn't one the player had much if any direct input on. Never played Imperator so I can't rightfully say, but from what I've seen/ heard it's more akin to EU4 than it is the others (you play as a nation and focus on expanding) but with a dash of CK2 thrown in (as it has a bunch of characters to manage).Ĭombat tactics were nothing but randomly assigned modifiers to damage. Vic 2 you once again play as a nation but it's focus is more on economics/ industrialisation and colonisation, there is still warfare but it's not as much about grabbing land than it is in the other games due to the infamy mechanic keeping you in check. You can still play it as a straight up map painter if you want though.ĮU4 is more of a map painter, you play as a nation and try to expand/ colonise as much as you can to stomp all over the ai nations. It plays a fair bit like an rpg in some ways since you play as a character in your dynasty and interact with all the various other characters both in your court and in foreign realms. CK2 is all about dynasties rather than any one nation, it's about building up a strong family and spreading that family to as many thrones as you can more than it is about map painting.
